Beauty and the Beast – The Original Broadway Musical Spectacular.
If you haven’t already heard, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Broadway musical arrived at our Singapore shores some weeks back. From the producers of The Lion King, the award-winning production has been much anticipated by many. I know many of my friends have already caught the musical and gave rave reviews. So, some nights back, the husband and me clocked in a fun date night catching the musical at MasterCard Theatres, Marina Bay Sands. It was a lovely night, I must confess.
I think many of us grew up with the classic Disney animated film and is familiar with the storyline – Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped in a spell placed by an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed to his former self. But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity.
I remember growing up listening and singing to the Disney tunes from Beauty & the Beast and learning to memorise all those lyrics. One of my favourites is the song, Belle, the one that goes Bonjour! Bonjour!. I was really anticipating all my favourite songs that night! When the musical started, I was so enthralled by the spectacular sets, the fancifully coloured costumes that are oh so close to what I remember the animation to be.
Some of my favourites costumes are the more elaborate ones, which include the Lumiere (the candlestick holder), Cogsworth (the pendulum clock), as well as all the cutlery in the kitchen. The cutlery is super cute!
But the gist of a musical is the singing right? Belle’s voice was amazing. She sang each and every song perfectly. I also super love Mrs Potts (the teapot) when she sang the Beauty & the Beast theme song right under the stars. All the rest of the the characters sang the rest of the songs were right on cue as well. Lovely voices they all have!
Oh, some part the musical was infuriating! I almost wanted to give the Gaston a punch in the face if I could. He was soooooo annoying and true to his role… which also means, it was a really stellar performance. He is also quite funny at times though. Oh, a trivia.. if you have yet to watch the Beauty & the Beast and is intending to, look out for the hidden “Mickey” in the tavern set drop!
I also in awe of the performance of the tavern mugs clinking, the coordination and the synergy of the crew on the set is really quite amazing. That really took me by surprise. I shan’t do any more spoilers, I must make your money’s worth the while with the surprises the musical will deliver.
By the way, if you have seen the Lion King musical and is wondering if this is anything similar, I am going to tell you not to compare. It is very different. The Lion King musical a powerful performance filled with loads of life and activity and interaction. The Beauty and the Beast will definitely pale in comparison in that sense because it is somewhat, a much gentler musical, peppered with a whole lot more conversations, and have more romantic under-the-stars quiet moments for two.
Just don’t miss out this international sensation that been played in 13 countries. The show ends on 3 May, in just about 2 weeks’ time! Ticket prices starts from $65, and you can book your tickets from the Marina Bay Sands website or Sistic.
