Where we stay in Bangkok – Tune Hotel
I am going to share about Tune Hotel, Asoke today. It is the hotel that I stayed in during my recent family trip to Bangkok, Thailand. I have stayed in quite a few hotels in Bangkok, but mostly the full service, more expensive hotels. Not because I am atas okay. Some trips’ accommodation were not booked by me. Other times, it was mostly to suit everyone’s expectations and requests.
I’m easy when it comes to hotels on travel trips. I can accept anything that comes with a decent bed and toilet in the room! Com’on. I usually don’t spend a lot of time in the hotel when I am overseas anyway. It is just a place to sleep/rest and shower since I will be out and about most of the time so the bed and the toilet are the most important things in the room. Nothing else matters, really. Oh, and maybe free wifi!
It’s a no-frills hotel and I wasn’t expecting much. However, the hotel is clean, well-maintained and looks and feels pretty new! The reception area was quite spacious and the staff all spoke good english. Checking in was a breeze too. I was delighted to find out that there was free wifi. Each wifi password allows you to connect to 3 devices. Between the husband and me, we had more than 3 devices and the staff gave me another wifi password so we didn’t have to share! I love how flexible they are here because wifi is oh-so-important to me.
Here’s our room!
The room isn’t huge, but it isn’t cram or small either. It was just about right to move around comfortably with a huge, inviting bed. The 5- stars bed is one of the key highlights of the room! It’s a high quality spring mattress bed that comes with fluffy pillows. The bedsheets and pillow cases all feels pretty luxurious and not rough at all! I found out that they are 250-thread count duvets, custom-made by bedmakers who supply 5-star hotels. Oohh.. that explains!
Look what my little prince did moments after he took off his shoes. Tsk. He does really know how to enjoy life huh!
Surely that says something about comfort level? A kid never lies, and I think this picture is testimony enough. We didn’t do much upon check in because we were rushing to bring Jerry to KidZania. We just kept our gadgets in the safe (yes, there is a safe!), packed a backpack filled with necessities for the kid and off we went!
I love how the hotel stood out in the street that it was in, and how modern the entire building looked. The bright exterior made it easier for me to find where out hotel was.
After a long day out, my favourite activity upon returning to the hotel is to bathe! I super love the power shower that they have in the room and the pressure is pretty solid. I love standing there with my back facing the shower and just let the water massage my aching body. Warm and comforting. It is as though I am getting a massage done! It also makes bathing a lot easier. I hate it when the water pressure is weak in the shower. When that happens, I always feel as though I can’t quite wash myself clean.
Even Jerry could tell the difference and had a lot of fun bathing. Without any prompting, he did the same thing that I did – letting the water beat down his back. He even had a smile on his face while at it, obviously enjoying it.
Some of the other room features include having both the fan and air-conditioning in the same room. This is a first for me (I haven’t seen it before in any other hotel I stayed in), but I am not complaining! I liked the idea of flexibility where I can turn on the fan instead of the air-conditioning when it gets too cold. Thought it was especially useful since we switched off the air conditioning when Jerry bathes but still had the fan on for a little ventilation. The ceiling fan is also the very quiet type! I can’t even tell it is on when it is.
I always love the idea of having more than 1 mirror in the room, because there will always be someone in the toilet. Not having an extra mirror makes prepping to go out a little cumbersome sometimes. Tune Hotel’s room has got more than enough mirrors – in the toilet, just beside the TV, and the wall behind the bed. I love the ease of having a mirror everywhere. Ok. Ok. I am vain.
Random picture of Jerry sleeping. I love watching my kid sleep. Its therapeutic.. P.s. There is also a hairdryer in the room! Another plus point for me especially when I have thick, long hair to dry before I can head off to bed.
There’s aren’t any physical table in the room, only 2 bedside tables for us to place our stuff like wallets, watches and rings but I like that there is a space saving ledge where you can pull down for meals or simply do some work on a laptop.
The room is really no frills, but it has everything I need for my stay in Bangkok. The space’s just right and I don’t feel cram as compared to the much smaller hotels I stayed in HK or Europe. It’s pretty comfortable even though I squeezed in a family of 3. I also like how there is a huge window and the sunlight makes the room airy and bright.
Jerry even managed to find space to play all by himself, much to the husband’s horror! He kept telling Jerry that the floor is dirty. While I second the husband’s thoughts, I am not as anal. After all, I grew up in a kampung myself and this room is definitely much cleaner. Parenting is tough enough so I pick the battles to fight and let go of some. Besides, there is house keeping services to keep the room clean so it can’t be that bad right?
Jerry even manages to display some creativity while at it! He perches his excavator on my camera strap that is dangling from the bedside table and swings it side to side.
Last but not least, the Tune Hotel, Asoke resides in a great location. It is barely 200m from the Asoke BTS train station (less than 5 mins walk) and a stone’s throw away from Terminal 21 Shopping Mall. It’s super easy to get to anywhere since the BTS is so near and didn’t have any issues in getting around. Here’s a map for your reference.
There is also a “coffee shop” styled restaurant where there is a wide variety of local food choices. You won’t miss this because it’s just a few doors away and would definitely pass by when you are walking to the BTS station. We had one of our lunches there and it tasted pretty good! It is always bustling with loads of patrons, and I guess the crowd do tells you a lot about the food too right?
Here’s some other notes about the Tune Hotel to note. They practise an affordable pay-as-you-use system of add-ons for energy-consuming facilities and amenities, in a bid to stay affordable as well as to conserve the earth’s resources.
You won’t find a kettle in the room but hot water can be purchased from the reception for 10 baht. We had to make milk for Jerry in the mornings and at night, so we had to make the purchase of hot water. If you are planning to stay here with your kids, you might need to take note of this. Tip! We had a hot water flask with us so we bought the water just before bed time, and filled the entire flask with hot water for the next morning. This way, we saved both money, trips down to the reception and prevent wastage.
Since there are 3 of us staying in the room, I also asked for an additional towel but was not charged for it. Other amenities like soap, shampoo, slippers are chargeable and there is a “shop” window display at the reception for you to check out the items and purchase, but we didn’t had to use it. I thought it is a brilliant idea because I never use the hotel’s soap anyway, so I totally feel its right that I don’t pay for that.
Likewise, don’t expect free water in the room. I always buy a few litres of water for the hotel room when I travel because I’m such a water guzzler, so it didn’t even impact me at all during my stay, but I thought it’s good to share and might be useful for some of you. Mineral water is available at the reception as well, but I recommend you getting it from the supermarkets when you are out.
Jerry discovered a fun thing at the hotel reception while I was checking in. There is a camera where you can trigger it to take picture and email it to friends and families. We took a family selfie and Jerry took tons of selfies himself. He surely knows how to enjoy himself!
I also found out that Tripadvisor also has loads of good reviews about the hotel, so I am really not alone. You can read all the tripadvisor’s reviews on Tune Hotel, Asoke here. You are welcome. Last but not least, the concierge is really friendly! He is like Jerry’s new friend over 2 days we stayed there and I am so thankful for an extra pair of eyes that help us keep tabs on Jerry as he runs in and out of the hotel.
We enjoyed our stay and the location is really superb. Minimal walking required and I don’t mind staying here the next time I travel to Bangkok if I get to decide the accommodation! Thank you Tune Hotel for putting us up!
